Description Winery Restaurants in North Okanagan
From Villa Orion Penticton it’s an average 45 minutes’ drive to one of these six famous Kelowna winery restaurants.
First is `the Old Vines Restaurant and Wine Bar at Quails’ Gate Winery, open throughout the year. And there are the outdoor patios that offer more options to nab a table during peak summer touring season.
Then we have the Stewart family’s Quails’ Gate facilities on the slopes of the Boucherie Mountain Bench. Chef Roger Sleiman creates perfect pairings for wines from Quails’ Gate.
Another Okanagan Winery Restaurant is The Terrace Restaurant at Mission Hill Estate Winery owned by the Anthony von Mandl family. A true retreat. Here are roses, vineyards and a stunning architecture meant to be leisurely appreciated. Known for its fine art collections. Mission Hill hosted for example in 2014 the sculptures from Icelandic artist Steinunn Thórarinsdóttir. Chef Patrick Gayler creates exquisite dishes.
New to the Westside Wine Trail this season is Blu Saffron at Volcanic Hills Estate Winery. The restaurant and large patio with sweeping lake and vine views allows Chef Rayner to combine his International experience with western Canadian cuisine. In West Kelowna, the Barrel Top Grill at Little Straw Vineyards is another great option. Here Chef Trevor Mayhew fulfills the Slamka family`s commitment to support the community and you`ll enjoy a wide selection of local products on the menu.
Heading back to “Lake Country”, you’ll find one of the earliest established at “Grapevine Restaurant at Gray Monk Estate Winery”. Owner Marie Franz, Winery Chef Willi Franz and Restaurant Chef Rene Haudenschild leverage locally-grown produce, sustainable seafood, meats and poultry from local producers and purveyors to complement the Heiss family wines.
Let’s travel to East Kelowna next along the “Lakeshore Wine Route”. First up it’s “Sunset Organic Bistro at Summerhill Pyramid Winery”, where Founder/Proprietor Stephen Cipes along with Executive Chef Jesse Croy invite you to Think World Class. Eat Local and Organic. Organic vegetables are from Summerhill’s on site permaculture garden. They star in the Sunset Bistro`s seasonal menus.
Recently welcomed into the Anthony von Mandl family of Mission when CedarCreek Estate Winery was sold by the Senator Ross Fitzpatrick family, the Vineyard Terrace provides a vantage point from the opposite side of Okanagan Lake. Here Winery Chef Jeremy Tucker showcases local, seasonal ingredients at their freshest in following the farm-to-table philosophy.
Okanagan Winery Restaurants in Central Okanagan
From Villa Orion Penticton it’s an average 8 minutes’ walk to the Poplar Grove. And to Red Rooster and Hillside a 23 minutes’ walk over the Kettle Valley Trail. Take for the other winery restaurants in South Okanagan your car. It’ll take you a 10 till 35 minutes’ drive to the other winery restaurants.
As we head out to South Okanagan winery restaurants, check out Bonitas Bistro at Bonitas Winery of Bottleneck Drive. It is Summerland’s only winery located on Okanagan Lake and promises a “Touch of the Mediterranean, Okanagan style.”
On the Naramata Bench, we are spoiled by selection. Perched below Munson Mountain overlooking Penticton is The Vanilla Pod at Poplar Grove Winery, owned by Paul Jones. Here Executive Chef Bruno Terroso uses fresh Okanagan ingredients to create Tapas-style dishes of Mediterranean flavours.
At The Pecking Room Patio Grill at Red Rooster Winery, Chef Darin Paterson’s “love of diversity in different cultures and life shows in the food”. Try char-grilled lamb with sesame lemon drizzle and quinoas salad or flatbreads from the wood stove. Chef Paterson also owns and operates Bogner’s of Penticton.
Executive Chef Rob Cordonier`s mission at the “Hillside Winery and Bistro” is “to produce interesting flavour combinations to compliment” Hillside wines. Build an appetite or work off the calories by climbing the observation tower to capture the vista of vineyards and glistening Okanagan Lake as seen from nearby “Kettle Valley Trail”.
Closer to Naramata at “The Patio at Lake Breeze” Chef Mark Ashton creates the ultimate match to Lake Breeze wines by Winemaker and President Garron Elmes. Chef Ashton also sources ingredients from regional independent growers and artisans and proudly proclaims membership in the “Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise Program” committed to ocean-friendly buying decisions.
Heading back into Penticton on Upper Bench, here you can experience “Portuguese Tapas with Mexican flare” by Chef Abul Adame at “The Kitchen” at “Misconduct Wine Co.” Chef Adame combines his Mexican roots with his Portuguese friend and winemaker Richard da Silva. The Paella is a perennial favourite. Try the Shrimp and Octopus ceviche!
Down the road is “Upper Bench Estate Winery and Creamery” that is a partnership between Wayne and Margareta Nystrom and daughter Tessa Sjöblom with Winemaker Gavin and his wife Cheesemaker Shana Miller. The cheese is artfully made from scratch onsite.
Description Winery Restaurants in South Okanagan
The Okanagan Falls Winery Association started a couple of exciting alternatives.
Liquidity Winery President Ian MacDonald was delighted to announce a partnership with Dave Keeler, Vintage Hospitality Ltd to launch Liquidity Bistro. Linger over lunch or delight in dinner while feasting on the vista of vineyards, Vaseux Lake and McIntyre Bluff.
Over at Smoke and Oak at Wild Goose Vineyards, GM Roland Kruger and family with Chef Sarren Wolfe give you “Southern ‘Okanagan’ BBQ infused with German Soul”. Inspired by three generations of Kruger family recipes, Chef Wolfe makes authentic German Spaetzle to go along with meats such as ribs from his slow smoker imported from Tennessee.
Moving south into the Oliver Osoyoos Wine Country, you’ll discover another exciting development. The Joy Road Vineyard Kitchen at Black Hills Estate Winery. Winery President Glenn Fawcett speaks of Black Hills passion for the phenomenal terroir. With Joy Road Proprietors and Chefs Dana Ewart and Cameron Smith’s funky kitchen in a shipping container, Black Hills is crafting an experience that reflects the terroir. From its start in selling pies at the Penticton Farmers’ Market, Joy Road has had a grand journey and you’ll find them catering many of the Okanagan’s most prestigious events: Think Orofino Winery’s legendary 1.6-mile dinner, long table dinners Thursday and Sundays at God’s Mountain Estate and the inaugural Evening of Effervescence at Linden Gardens of Kaleden.
Miradoro Restaurant at Tinhorn Creek Vineyards is another example of a brilliant partnership with Tinhorn Creek collaborating with Manuel Ferreira, owner of Le Gavroche in Vancouver. Perched like a glass palace of clean architectural lines with panoramic views of the valley, Miradoro with its hint of Mediterranean cuisine by Executive Chef Jeff Geest is a must on your winery restaurant list. Closed only in January and February, it is open for lunch, tapas and dinner daily. Chef Geest is a larger than life character on a first name basis with local farmers, producers and foragers.
Next door at Terrafina Restaurant at Hester Creek Owner April Goldade and Chef Jenna Pillon will have you “feeling far away from the everyday ordinary” in the upscale casual Italian Bistro. In fact, with its old world charm, massive wood-sculptured door, rustic wood pillars, aged brickwork and iron chandelier, Terrafina brings a touch of Tuscany to the Okanagan. Don’t miss its wood-fired pizzas with simply exquisite toppings, and if you’re there for brunch, have the breakfast pizza with farm eggs and mozzarella.
On the other side of the valley, the Sonora Room at Burrowing Owl beckons. The Wyse family partnered with Restaurant Operator David Keeler to pair its wines and scenic splendour with “epicurean excellence”. In the kitchen, Chef Brock Bowes delivers that promise with highly creative locavore cuisine.
A special trip into Osoyoos and the meticulous Spirit Ridge Resort property to “The Patio at Nk’Mip” is worthy of a road trip. Chef Liam McNulty`s meals are described “as rustic and heartwarming with a family-style focus on rich, savory comfort meals”.
