Description Winery Restaurants in North Okanagan

From Villa Orion Penticton it’s an average 45 minutes’ drive to one of these six famous Kelowna winery restaurants.

There are the tried and true such as the Old Vines Restaurant and Wine Bar at Quails’ Gate Winery that remains open throughout the year to delight tourists and residents alike. And there are the outdoor patios that offer more options to nab a table during peak summer touring season.

    "Okanagan Winery Restaurants"

Meticulously designed as Okanagan Winery Restaurant is all the Stewart family’s Quails’ Gate facilities, Old Vines is set on the slopes of the Boucherie Mountain Bench taking full advantage of vineyard and lake vistas. Here Chef Roger Sleiman has pioneered farm-to-table cuisine paired perfectly with the wines and has created menus of ingredients from surrounding fields and pastures, the kitchen garden and regional farms. I had the privilege this summer to join the British Columbia Wine Institute (BCWI) at a Visa Infinite Wine Country Dinner hosted there. To present an outstanding multi-course dinner and sparkling wine reception, Chef Chris Whittaker of Forage Vancouver and Chef Andrew Winfield of River Café Calgary joined Chef Sleiman in the kitchen. Together they created the perfect pairings for wines from Quails’ Gate and other celebrated BC wineries with Master of Wine Rhys Pender providing introductions. Visa Infinite and Visa Infinite Privilege cardholders get exclusive access to special benefits at over 30 wineries in British Columbia. Along with complimentary tastings, discounts, cardholders can purchase one-of-a-kind crafted winery experiences, long-table dinners held at breathtaking and elegant winery estates with food prepared by prominent and distinguished chefs and new in 2014, winery-focused culinary escape weekends.

The Terrace Restaurant at Mission Hill Estate Winery owned by the Anthony von Mandl family is the ultimate seasonal patio. It is a true retreat where even the gate is intentionally narrow. The idea is to slow down your pace to give you pause to smell the roses. Yes, there are roses as well as vineyards and stunning architecture meant to be leisurely appreciated. Known for its fine art collection, Mission Hill hosted “Encounters with Iceland” sculpture exhibit by the renowned Icelandic artist Steinunn Thórarinsdóttir through the summer to October 2014. While the exhibit is on, guests are encouraged to capture the spectacular sculptures in social media photographs to compete for two tickets to Iceland. Capture your shot and enter the Encounter with Iceland contest. While time is limited to view the entire exhibit, Mission Hill will be adding a special piece or two to its permanent collection. One visit this summer, I was hosted to join Executive Winery Chef Chris Stewart in a tour of the kitchen and gardens. Chef Stewart is a chef, gardener and forager. Greens we gathered from the grounds and peas we plucked at peak from the garden were later found on our plates in The Terrace Restaurant. When you enter the patio restaurant and see the size of the kitchen in which Restaurant Chef Patrick Gayler and team create the exquisite dishes, you’ll be dazzled by how form and function it actualized in such a small space.

New to the Westside Wine Trail this season is Blu Saffron at Volcanic Hills Estate Winery. Winery President Bobby Gidda says Chef/Proprietor Colin Rayner`s cuisine is perfect to complement the wines and enhance visits to the tasting room and shop. The restaurant and large patio with sweeping lake and vine views allows Chef Rayner to combine his International experience with western Canadian cuisine. In West Kelowna, the Barrel Top Grill at Little Straw Vineyards is another great option. Here Chef Trevor Mayhew fulfills the Slamka family`s commitment to support the community and you`ll enjoy a wide selection of local products on the menu.

Heading back to Lake Country, you’ll find one of the earliest established at Grapevine Restaurant at Gray Monk Estate Winery. Owner Marie Franz, Executive Winery Chef Willi Franz and Executive Restaurant Chef Rene Haudenschild leverage locally-grown produce, sustainable seafood, meats and poultry from local producers and purveyors to complement the Heiss family wines. Okanagan Chef of the Year 2010 Franz says, “A meal is meant to be the catalyst for great conversation while stirring the senses.” Your senses will be truly stirred with the meal and the sight of vineyards, Okanagan Lake and the hills beyond.

    BC Wine

Let’s travel to East Kelowna next along the Lakeshore Wine Route. First up it’s Sunset Organic Bistro at Summerhill Pyramid Winery, where Founder/Proprietor Stephen Cipes along with Executive Chef Jesse Croy invite you to “Think World Class. Eat Local & Organic.” Organic vegetables are from Summerhill’s onsite permaculture garden and once carefully harvested and processed, they star in the Sunset Bistro`s seasonal menus. Chef Croy’s approach is to balance “simplicity and complexity when approaching the plate, ensuring the ingredient and its origin are always well respected.”

Recently welcomed into the Anthony von Mandl family of Mission when CedarCreek Estate Winery was sold by the Senator Ross Fitzpatrick family, the Vineyard Terrace provides a vantage point from the opposite side of Okanagan Lake. Here Winery Chef Jeremy Tucker showcases local, seasonal ingredients at their freshest in following the farm-to-table philosophy. In the open air restaurant that wraps around the Wineshop, guests enjoy a perfect setting to savor wine, food and the view.

Okanagan Winery Restaurants in Central Okanagan

From Villa Orion Penticton it’s an average 8 minutes’ walk to the Poplar Grove. And to Red Rooster and Hillside a 23 minutes’ walk over the Kettle Valley Trail. Take for the other winery restaurants in South Okanagan your car. It’ll take you a 10 till 35 minutes’ drive to the other winery restaurants.

As we head out to South Okanagan winery restaurants, check out Bonitas Bistro at Bonitas Winery of Bottleneck Drive. It is Summerland’s only winery located on Okanagan Lake and promises a “Touch of the Mediterranean, Okanagan style.” There has been some chef changes of late so confirm hours before you visit.

On the Naramata Bench, we are spoiled by selection. Perched below Munson Mountain overlooking Penticton is The Vanilla Pod at Poplar Grove Winery, owned by Sheila and Paul Jones. Here Executive Chef Bruno Terroso uses fresh Okanagan ingredients to create Tapas-style dishes of Mediterranean and other international flavours. Herbs grown next to the restaurant and tomatoes sourced from his own garden adorn his innovative plates.

At The Pecking Room Patio Grill at Red Rooster Winery, Chef Darin Paterson’s “love of diversity in different cultures and life shows in the food”. Here on the casual patio, try items like char-grilled lamb with sesame lemon drizzle and quinoas salad or flatbreads from the wood stove. Chef Paterson also owns and operates Bogner’s of Penticton.

Executive Chef Rob Cordonier at the Hillside Winery & Bistro showcases the best of what local farmers are growing. Along with Chef de Cuisine Brent Pillon, Chef Cordonier’s mission is “to produce interesting flavour combinations to compliment” Hillside wines. Dishes are prepared simply and ingredients treated with the utmost respect. Build an appetite or work off the calories by climbing the observation tower to capture the vista of vineyards and glistening Okanagan Lake as seen from nearby Kettle Valley Trail.

Closer to Naramata, seize the limited opportunity between May to mid-October to snag a seat at Okanagan Winery Restaurant at Lake Breeze where Chef Mark Ashton creates the ultimate match to Lake Breeze wines by Winemaker & President Garron Elmes. Chef Ashton also sources ingredients from regional independent growers and artisans and proudly proclaims membership in the Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise Program committed to ocean-friendly buying decisions.

Heading back into Penticton on Upper Bench, it’s not just the road that offers a curve. Here you can experience “Portuguese Tapas with Mexican flare” by Chef Abul Adame at The Kitchen at Misconduct Wine Co. Chef Adame combines his Mexican roots with his Portuguese friend and winemaker Richard da Silva. The Paella is a perennial favourite and I love the Shrimp and Octopus ceviche.

Down the road is Upper Bench Estate Winery & Creamery that is a partnership between Wayne and Margareta Nystrom and daughter Tessa Sjöblom with Winemaker Gavin and his wife Cheesemaker Shana Miller. For this round up of winery restaurants I haven’t included those wineries with patios that allow you to bring your own picnic or offer packaged small plates such as cheese and charcuterie. I made the exception for Upper Bench because the cheese is artfully made from scratch onsite.

The Okanagan Falls Winery Association is just starting a couple of exciting alternatives.

Liquidity Winery President Ian MacDonald was delighted to announce a partnership with Dave Keeler, Vintage Hospitality Ltd to launch Liquidity Bistro. Executive Chef Rob Walker matches the modern architecture with an “urban take on classic Canadian wine country cuisine with influences from around the Okanagan Valley and Pacific North West.” Linger over lunch or delight in dinner while feasting on the vista of vineyards, Vaseux Lake and McIntyre Bluff.

Over at Smoke and Oak at Wild Goose Vineyards, GM Roland Kruger and family with Chef Sarren Wolfe give you “Southern ‘Okanagan’ BBQ infused with German Soul”. Inspired by three generations of Kruger family recipes, Chef Wolfe makes authentic German Spaetzle to go along with meats such as ribs from his slow smoker imported from Tennessee.

Moving south into the Oliver Osoyoos Wine Country, you’ll discover another exciting development. The Joy Road Vineyard Kitchen at Black Hills Estate Winery. Winery President Glenn Fawcett speaks of Black Hills passion for the phenomenal terroir and adds, “Joy Road are really into the cuisine terroir so it is a really great fit.” With Joy Road Proprietors and Chefs Dana Ewart and Cameron Smith’s funky kitchen in a shipping container, Black Hills is crafting an experience that reflects the terroir. Pairing Joy Roads culinary style with Winemaker Graham Pierce’s creations, says Fawcett, gives a good perspective on the impact of terroir and is “one of the coolest things about the pairing.” From its start in selling pies at the Penticton Farmers’ Market, Joy Road has had a grand journey and you’ll find them catering many of the Okanagan’s most prestigious events: Think Orofino Winery’s legendary 1.6-mile dinner, long table dinners Thursday and Sundays at God’s Mountain Estate and the inaugural Evening of Effervescence at Linden Gardens of Kaleden.

Miradoro Restaurant at Tinhorn Creek Vineyards is another example of a brilliant partnership with Tinhorn Creek collaborating with Manuel Ferreira, owner of Le Gavroche in Vancouver. Perched like a glass palace of clean architectural lines with panoramic views of the valley, Miradoro with its hint of Mediterranean cuisine by Executive Chef Jeff Geest is a must on your winery restaurant list. Closed only in January and February, it is open for lunch, tapas and dinner daily. Chef Geest is a larger than life character on a first name basis with local farmers, producers and foragers.

Next door at Terrafina Restaurant at Hester Creek Owner April Goldade and Chef Jenna Pillon will have you “feeling far away from the everyday ordinary” in the upscale casual Italian Bistro. In fact, with its old world charm, massive wood-sculptured door, rustic wood pillars, aged brickwork and iron chandelier, Terrafina brings a touch of Tuscany to the Okanagan. Don’t miss its wood-fired pizzas with simply exquisite toppings, and if you’re there for brunch, have the breakfast pizza with farm eggs and mozzarella.

    Luxury Retreat Orion Penticton

On the other side of the valley, the Sonora Room at Burrowing Owl beckons. The Wyse family partnered with Restaurant Operator David Keeler to pair its wines and scenic splendour with “epicurean excellence”. In the kitchen, Chef Brock Bowes and his talented culinary team deliver that promise with highly creative locavore cuisine.

A special trip into Osoyoos and the meticulous Spirit Ridge Resort property to The Patio at Nk’Mip is worthy of a road trip. Chef Liam McNulty invites you to sample locally-sourced gourmet cuisine, sip award-winning wines and enjoy the breathtaking view. His food is described “as rustic and heartwarming with a family-style focus on rich, savory comfort meals”.
